Welcome

Hello and welcome to our class page! Our class is called Derby University and we are in year 6. Taught by Miss Lee and Miss Rickett, we love getting involved in fun, active and challenging learning in our class. We are GREAT role models for the rest of the school.

Autumn 1

In the first half-term we are reading a book called 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo and focusing our learning around science and geography. This is a fantastic book about a boy named Michael who is washed up on an island in the Pacific and his journey to survive after he finds out he is not alone on the island….who is it?!

Our class will be doing lots of exciting writing and focusing on our use of sentence structures and vocabulary to write texts such as a news reports about a missing person, a monologue from the point of view of Kensuke, an email to Michael about how to filter dirty water and a letter in a bottle to Michael's parents.  Over the course of the half-term we will also be using lots of ICT to enhance our learning in order to research about different places around the world which Michael visited such as Africa and Brazil as well as using the app 'Minecraft' to design our own version of Michael's boat, the Peggy Sue. As well as this, we will be doing lots of learning in science to try and help Michael on his adventure. Such learning includes designing and making a lighthouse with electrical circuits, investigating how who can filter the cleanest water and learning all about evolution and adaptation. We will also be using our survival skills 'Bear-Grylls style' to find out if we could survive on a deserted island! We are going to embrace the outdoors by thinking about the type of equipment we would need to take, what we would eat and of course have a go at campfire cooking. Have we got what it takes?

We are also extremely excited as we will soon be going on our year 6 residential to Whitehall! We will take parts in lots of fun activities such as rock climbing and canoeing as well as learning to look after ourselves and each other. Check back here soon to find some pictures of our adventures! Wow – what a GREAT half-term!

Welcome

Welcome to Year 5! Our class name is Bath University and our teacher is Miss Elks. We are a hardworking and enthusiastic class who will be helped by our lovely teaching assistant Mrs Orten.
Our whole class targets for this year are to attend school every day so we can win the attendance award, to learn our times tables and work extra hard to practise our spellings. We will be doing PE on Tuesdays and Fridays so it is important that our PE kits are in school on these days.

This term our chosen book is 'Children of Winter' by Berlie Doherty. This is the exciting story of three children and their bid for survival against the terrible bubonic plague that is spreading across their village.

It is a superb book set in 1666 in the village of Eyam in Derbyshire. We will begin our journey by finding out about Eyam, investigating what the plague was and why it destroyed so many lives. We will also be comparing what the village of Eyam is like today compared to what is was like in 1666.

During the term we will be working very hard on our reading and writing. We will be writing our own descriptions of Eyam, persuasive letters and we will even be writing our own ending to our book 'Children of Winter'. We will be finding out about what life was like during the winter of 1666, creating our own shelters and making our own cures for the plague!! Wow! What an exciting half term!!

Autumn 2

This term we are reading 'Space, Stars and Slimy Aliens' by Nick Arnold and Tony De Saulles. It is a fantastic non-fiction book in the Horrible Science series. This space-hopping book tells us what the moon smells like, takes us through the solar system and teaches us which galaxies eat each other!

During this half term we will be working very hard on our reading and writing.  We will be writing our own descriptions of Earth, persuasive letters to NASA and we will even be writing our own science fiction narratives. In Design and Technology we will be designing and building our own moon buggies and in science we will be researching why we get night and day. Also. we will be finding out about the different planets and the universe! Wow! What an exciting half term!!

Welcome

Welcome to the Year 4 Queen's University Belfast class page. The class is taught by Miss Ellison and supported by Mrs Hughes. Miss Ellison is originally from Northern Ireland and encouraged the children to pick an Irish University to name the class. The children chose Queen's University after carrying out research and looking at pictures of the beautiful building.

Across both Year 4 classes we have an exciting year ahead of us with many GREAT things planned. During the first half term, we will be journeying with James and his Giant Peach, experimenting with science and learning about other countries.

Trips
Friday 2nd October – Trip to Conkers ('Habitats and Minibeasts')

Autumn 1
During Autumn1 we learned about James and the Giant Peach, we covered lots of Science and Geography through learning about minibeasts, food chains and the digestive system. A particular highlight for some of the children was having the opportunity to carry out an investigation to show how poo is made in our bodies.  We also went on a trip to Conkers to look at minibeasts and learn more about their habitats.
For our Famous Person, we looked at World Cup 2015 Rugby Captains, we created our own class Haka and had an inter-class rugby tournament

Autumn 2

This half term we are learning about Gangsta Granny and the importance of showing respect and care to everyone including the elderly. Towards the end of half term we will be visiting a nursing home and carry out some arts and crafts to prove that not all elderly people sit all day eating Murray Mints and playing Scrabble. The children will be dressing up as Grannies and Granddads on Friday 27th November and parents/carers and grandparents will be invited in to have afternoon tea with us which will be prepared by the children. We are also looking forward to learning about the Romans in week 5 and are looking forward to creating a museum to showcase our learning to the whole school and parents/carers.
